Dave Kim had a birthday this year, just like last year, but this time he invited a few friends to make a visit to Storm King Art Center a few miles up the Hudson River. Though the season was extended to unseasonably warm weather, the leaves had dropped, revealing all the beautiful sculptures ready for some Fuji Superia 400.

On the way home we crossed the Tappan Zee Bridge, which will soon be demolished. Thanks to a mix of politics and greed, New York State built the bridge north of the NY/NJ Port Authority’s jurisdiction to keep the tolls and revenue to itself. This means the bridge crosses the Hudson at it’s second widest point — at nearly 3 miles in length, it’s fallen into disrepair and has become too costly to maintain.

Storm King is closed for the seasons, but see you next year!

On the hottest day of the year its finally appropriate to post a series of photos I shot at a sculpture studio Greenpoint. I was introduced to Brett Tetro right as he was about to melt down some AK-47s– to transform into high class jewelry. The mangled metal bits of machine guns arrive from Africa out of the hands of villains and into the hands of an artist.

Brett explains how he’ll melt, hammer and fold the metal bar multiple times to remove impurities from the raw steel. The block of steel that he previously melted from barrels of AKs gets ready for smithing.

Firing up the propane oven to 2000 degrees to transform the block of steel into a white hot bar of fire. It seemed like such an easy task for a small oven.

Flattening out the steel bar, thinning the profile, reducing the thickness to expose more surface area to the flame.

Brett and his brother ready the hammer to fold the sample– lapping the molten steel onto itself.

Stepping back from the sparks, halfway to 180.

After one fold the flux and carbon hit the grinder. Now its back to the oven for more hammering and folding. Once the metal is pure enough Brett will machine it into uber expensive jewelry. A group of folks will hit the road to gather more AKs from Africa, dismantle them and bring them back to Brett. Hopefully this cycle will generate enough funds to make hostile places around the world habitable.

Brett and his bro are a couple of talented metal workers. Their work includes large scale metal stairs to very intricate jewelry. Their studio was littered with remnants of past projects and few finely finished pieces ready for the shelves. I hope to see Brett and the neighborhood in the future.

With new branding and a new website by SoftLAB it was time to commission handmade business cards to let everyone know whats up with Alan Tansey. My friend and Greenpoint neighbor Mark Herschede has a fine print studio down the street called Haven Press. He’s located in the GMDC a few blocks from my loft so I stopped by while he was printing my cards.

I was able to check out the studio and observe the card making process– from silk screening, cutting and letter pressing. Mark has some amazing old machinery for each park of the process and some creations of his own (like his custom large format parallel lift screen press.)

Preparing the inks for the letterpress machine and spreading it on the rollers was the most entertaining part of the process. The way that machine moves is elegant yet menacing.

Placing the copper plate with my logo and contact information was a precise task.

Because you wouldn’t want to make a wrong move with this thing up and running…

Seriously, what an awesome piece of machinery!

If you want some business cards drop me a line! I have many.

A bit of riding, a bit of product shots, a lot of fun. A few days upstate makes for an excellent weekend. Kyle of D’emploi invited me to model/photograph/hang out in Salem, NY for a weekend which happened to correspond with a kick ass iron pour at a sculpture studio. The trees had started to turn fairly early for late September on the East coast–but I wasn’t disappointed that fall was here…

We arrived around 1am on a Friday night, setup camp and hit the sleeping bags. As soon as light hit the autumn foliage the following morning we started shooting.

Kyle tossed his Random Triangle T on along with his waxed canvas Belt Bag and we got some decent test shots in while the sun was just right.

After a bit of messing around with cameras and products we decided to hit up forest for some better views.

We arrived at the top near a sculpture park and hung out for a bit.

After a long hike back to camp we headed to the country roads for some obligatory riding shots. No products here, just fun.

Right before the sun was about to set we gathered the gear and headed over to the railroad tracks. We pulled out Kyle’s handmade waxed canvas GP Rucksack and got to shooting. Ali, Peggy and I continuously shot Kyle and Jasper before the light disappeared behind the hills. We pulled off some great shots before it was too late. Ali and I were shooting digital while Peggy pulled out the Mamiya to grab a few polaroids.

After some serious shooting we took a rest and prepared for dinner. Kyle got a flat at some point and I decided to pull out my tilt/shift lens and mess around. Shooting so much architecture I rarely exploit the tilt function of the lens–we all know what that does.

Glad I pulled out these photos in the dead of winter… can’t wait for the next trip.

I stopped by the gallery to capture the diligent SOFTlab crew assembling and installing. Click continue to see more…

The gallery was full of anywhere between five and eight binder clippers, ring assemblers, gradient panel color installers hanging and directing the final assembly. Capturing any one–or three–of these tasks was pretty easy at any given moment.

Capturing a variety of color was no problem when the panels were being assembled. Each panel was aligned by using a laser etched numbering system, then carefully binder clipped and assembled into manageable portions. From reds and oranges to greens and yellows most of the spectrum was on display for the lens.

The rings were flexible enough to be twisted and folded while they awaited their final placement. I got to play with a few strips of color and experiment with photographing each.

Each member of the crew had a specific task–for the most part Elliot was hanging rings all day–so it was easy to sneak up on him while his hands were full.

The gallery window acted as the starting point for the installation. Each ring was preassembled and consecutively added to the first via ladder and monofilament.

An endless array of binder clips are shown on a completed view of the backside. The assembly numbering system was barely visible but the grid on which the piece was designed was clear at any view.

The glossy frontside gradient was difficult to capture with deep reflections of surrounding buildings in the depths of color.

The Bridge Gallery housed the installation for a few weeks. It was easy to stop by and photograph the process and final installation.

Check back for a posting of the final images.

Nitzan from Edits by Edit contacted me to help document a series of posters representing various musical genres. A limited run of posters was to be printed at Axelle Fine Arts over a 4 day period. The result was a series of photographs presenting the screen printing process to the outside world.

Click through to view a series of photographs documenting this process.

I was invited to the printing studio in Brooklyn to photograph two consecutive mornings of printing. I briefly met the crew and quickly started capturing equipment, inks, transparencies, screens and printing action shots.

The screens were created by exposing transparencies onto polyester screens–they dry and await their turn to the presses.

Each of the 13 posters were designed by a different artist and ink was precisely mixed to match the Pantone color of each artist’s specification.

The screen inked and ready for the squeegee.

Ink was reapplied as necessary–when each screen was finished every last drop of the costly ink was sure to be saved.

Axelle uses an auto-press machine rather than a hand inked machine–which made the work look easy. Although ease is relative when you have as much experience as theses folks do.

check the prints–

let them dry.

13 posters were printed with multiple color inks–some had very complicated and detailed screens–others used single inks and a few had special metallic inks.

All of the posters came out amazing and were ready to sell the following week. The shots will help the curator create some hype around the series and sell as many prints as possible–well until the limited run is extinguished

More shots of the final prints to come!
